Holmes & Rahe, two researchers in the 1960's, looked at the relationship between life events and sickness. By examining the recent life history of people who were in hospital and comparing this with a non-hospitalised group of people, they demonstrated that there was a connection between health and history. On deeper analysis, they were able to identify the key life events that carried risk, and now you can use their findings to check your own risk.

Below is a list of life events, with a score against each event. Add up your total score for all the events you have experienced in the last 12 months, and compare the total with the risk chart below. Don't forget, this shows you the risk of developing physical illness in the light of your life events, but doesn't predict that you necessarily will do so.
