Manager Support
We recognise that the role of managers is becoming increasingly difficult and complex. We acknowledge that managers often find themselves responsible for identifying stress in employees, whilst also trying to meet work objectives, maintain the organisational structure and personal-professional boundaries, follow disciplinary procedures, and provide help and support for distressed employees.
One of the ways that we can support managers is by raising the awareness of how the EAP programme can support individuals at all levels within the organisation, and enhance their performance at work. We also believe in training managers to recognise the common signs and symptoms of stress, helping them to intervene early and develop the skills to refer, formally or informally to the EAP. Early intervention, before situations become problems, by skilful, observant managers will help employees appreciate the value of the assistance for personal or work-related matters long before the employee's work performance is affected.
By providing immediate access to our broad range of services, we give managers tools they can use and resources they can signpost to, which enable them to continue to manage effectively and confidently. Our role is not to remove or replicate management responsibilities, but to enhance and complement these by providing appropriate support. Our service must not take the place of an HR department or give advice that may lead to a conflict of interest between employer and employee. It will offer guidance on how best to deal with a staff-related problem, with the emphasis on ensuring that the advice is imparted in the most appropriate and effective manner. This may be in a suggestion that the employee speaks to the helpline directly. We can advise managers on employment issues within the framework of UK law and this advice can be provided in conjunction with access to your people policies, wherein the legal advisors can offer guidance/clarify internal procedures and systems.
