One of our clients presented us with multiple personal issues including a recent relationship breakdown which had left him struggling to support himself and his young children. In addition he’d undertaken a caring role for his elderly father. The client saw his GP and was prescribed medication and signed off work for four weeks with stress and exhaustion.
Through contacting the EAP, access to counselling was provided. This enabled him to release many emotions connected to the loss of his relationship and to consider his role and responsibilities within the family in a safe, confidential environment. The client was able to consider his current priorities and to determine ways he could support himself and his family going forward. Feeling more energised, and with the support of his counsellor, our client was able to make contact with specialist agencies in the area to arrange for day care for his father and to make alternative practical childcare arrangements.
As the counselling ended the client felt ready to return to work to a job that he enjoyed and where he had a good network of friends and colleagues. Critically he had managed to pinpoint and identify triggers for stress, but more importantly had developed insight into his own needs and limits and had implemented strategies for managing his life in order to retain equilibrium.
